Anxiety / Depression

Anxiety and depression are very painful emotions that, when experienced, can range from mild and tolerable to severe and excruciating.  Anyone who has experienced the latter knows what I am talking about.

The reasons we experience anxiety and depression are very complex, involving emotional, cognitive, psychological, social, interpersonal and physiological variables. Understanding all of these variables and assessing their impact on any one individual is crucial to formulating a comprehensive and successful treatment plan.

Family problems and conflicts are one of the most difficult and complex problems a therapist faces. Everyone in the family system is impacted to a greater or lesser degree by the struggles each person may have, and by the struggles each person may have with any other family member.

The family therapist must understand the functioning of each person in the family system, both individually and interpersonally, and identify how each person contributes to and/or is impacted by the behavior of others in the family. A thorough understanding of all of these is crucial to the therapy process and to any comprehensive and meaningful change in the family.

I have worked with families in various clinical settings for over thirty years.

ABOUT

Mark

Blaustein

Our lives today are hectic and stressful, more so than ever before.  Much of the time we are on automatic pilot, running from one activity to the next. What often suffers most are ourselves and our relationships. Tension, worry, anxiety, and depression are often a consequence. We have less and less time and energy to invest in our personal relationships, including our significant others and our children. Technology pulls people even further apart. We end up feeling disconnected, even unloved. We often feel powerless to make changes, feeling stuck and often hopeless. Many of us live our lives like this.

Working women today have a particularly hard job. They now have to manage a career in addition to assuming the primary role in caring for the home and children, I have much experience working with women regarding these struggles, including many school teachers.

I have both graduate and post-graduate education in individual therapy and relationship therapy, including couples and family. Men are often more resistant to treatment than women. I have had much success in engaging men in both individual and relationship counseling. Working with young adults is also extremely rewarding. In addition, I have much experience working with both men and women of all ages who have re-entered the dating world.

Thank you Mark for helping me understand myself better, and for doing so in a caring and sensitive way. I had been having unsuccessful relationships with men for years.  I thought it was just them, and that I was just having bad luck in not finding the right guy.

My friend suggested I talk to somebody, that maybe I was doing something "wrong". I decided to choose a male therapist, that maybe a male therapist would give me a better perspective on men. Well, I did learn things about men, but far more important, I learned a lot about myself, about my expectations, about who I was looking for and why, and how I was sabotaging myself without realizing it.

I can't believe all the changes I´ve made, including finally finding a healthier relationship. Thanks again Mark, you´re a good guy and you were easy to talk to.

I knew I needed something because I was stressed-out all the time. I had no patience at all and I was having a hard time sleeping at night. I also felt sad but I didn't know why.  My life seemed fine. I am married and we have a child.  I got along well with my wife, and we have family and friends. Nothing was "wrong" except me. It was actually my boss who pushed me to finally do something.

I didn't know what to expect from therapy so I went with an open mind.  Mark listened to me and asked me a lot of questions. I was surprised at how good it felt, and I got connected to the process.  We talked about everything in my life. It wasn't long before I just felt better, more relaxed and happier.

I am still his patient. I feel like I could stop anytime  but I like my quiet hour once a week where I can focus on just me.

Couples usually seek counseling for any of a variety of reasons: when there is a breakdown in communicationwhen there is finger-pointing as to who is responsible for the problems they are having; and when anger and hurt have become too intolerable to bear any longer.

Couples counseling is a type of therapy that requires an understanding of how the couple interacts with each other.  This understanding includes how each individual's personality characteristics contributes to the couple´s dynamics.  As such, I have individual sessions as well as the couples sessions in the context of the couples therapy.

I have twenty-five years of experience working with couples in therapy.

My husband and I sought counseling because we just couldn't agree on anything. We were fighting all the time and blaming each other for our problems.  And worse, I knew this was affecting our kids hearing us fight all the time.

My husband is your typical guy, who didn´t think counseling would help. I know now he was embarrassed to talk about our problems, as well as some of his own problems.  He finally agreed to come to counseling when I threatened to leave him. I picked Mark because he is a man and thought maybe my husband would listen to a man better than he would a woman, where he might feel picked on. Turns out it was a great decision.  Mark really listened to us and my husband felt heard and supported, and I can't believe how much my husband talked.

Mark confronted both of us on what we were doing wrong and how we were making things worse, and he offered a lot of suggestions to do things differently.  He also has a good sense of humor, which helped make things not so serious all the time.  And it was nice to laugh with my husband.

Counseling has really helped us communicate better and respect each other. We now know we can work anything out as long as we work as a team and not feel that we have to fight each other to get our needs met.  I never thought we´d get to such a good place in our marriage.  I haven't been this happy in a long time.
